Hahnemühle Hemp paper, available in sheets and rolls up to 50-inches for fine art and photo printing, is now being offered as a book printing stock.

Hahnemühle Hemp uses one of the oldest and most diverse natural fibres in the world and is made of 60% hemp fibre. The FineArt inkjet paper’s base possesses a bright white natural tone, and thanks to the natural brightness of the hemp fibres, no optical brighteners are required. The lightly textured surface gives the paper a pleasant, silky feel. Combined with the matt premium inkjet coating, this is a truly versatile FineArt inkjet paper. Colours and details are brilliantly reproduced, the depth of the black truly stands out and contrasts are reproduced with stunning effect. The acid- and lignin-free FineArt inkjet paper meets the most exacting requirements for age resistance. Hemp was an essential part of paper production for centuries, and due to its extremely robust fibres, it has often been used for long-lasting historical documents, such as the Gutenberg Bible and the US Declaration of Independence.
Hahnemuhle has now extended its Hemp range to include a book-printing grade suited to continuous feed high-speed inkjet presses.
At the Frankfurt Book Fair 2021last month (October), the German paper manufacturer Hahnemühle presented the world’s first hybrid printing paper made from hemp fibres. The new uncoated paper for book and brochure printing is specially designed for high-speed inkjet, analogue offset and other flexible digital printing systems.

The paper was developed exclusively for printing the book “H is for HEMP”, an innovative hemp encyclopedia by photographer and author Maren Krings. “With my worldwide photo documentation and research on hemp, I want to encourage people to leave their comfort zone and get involved in proactive problem solving of our socio-ecological crisis. Finding a hemp paper to print my book was part of my commitment to make my own work more sustainable and to use hemp wherever possible. Hahnemühle’s hemp paper exceeded my expectations, offering a beautiful tactile and sensory experience and giving the book a fresh and completely new look. At the same time, it closes the loop of protecting native forests and finding alternative raw materials for paper making” says photographer and Climate Impact Storyteller Maren Krings.
Like all paper grades the new Hemp paper is produced with pure spring water which Hahnemühle has used since it´s founding days. The water is fed into the nearby river after a largely closed paper machine cycle – free from chemical cleaning agents, biocides or preservatives. The energy used for manufacturing comes exclusively from 100% renewable sources.
Hahnemühle Hemp digital printing paper's texture is achieved using wool felts directly in the production process. It is acid-free, therefore highly resistant to ageing and is also classified as 'vegan.' It is available in two grammages as cover and content paper in 280gsm and 80gsm respectively. Hahnemühle Hemp is offered in rolls up to 50 inches (127cm) wide, and is suited to most inkjet presses and well as liquid electrophotographic and offset processes
