Broken Hill City Council has confirmed that work will soon be underway to replace unpopular entry signage at five main road entrances to Broken Hill in far western NSW.
A blind judging panel chose the current design, supplied by a Melbourne-based designer, after a council-run competition.
Since being installed in 2019, the signs have been slammed by community members as “not showcasing any connection to the city's history.”
Broken Hill City Council announced late last year the signage at the Wentworth Road entrance would be replaced first.
Local graphic designer Deanna Spicer, whose design was chosen to replace the Wentworth Road sign, told ABC Broken Hill that the new sign will be mostly the same as her original design and will be cut out of sheet metal by a local business.
"A few tweaks have been made to suit it being able to be manufactured, and [we've] been working with the Wilyakali group to ensure we're honouring them in the correct way.”
Spicer has four other similar designs [above] ready replace the remaining signage.
"The project control group, in consultation with the community, will have to decide what design on each entry way as we move forward," said Broken Hill City Council general manager Jay Nankivell.
