“It's time to make some changes to the way Sign Making training is offered to our industry. We can do this by making the pathways to an apprenticeship, clearer, better and more achievable,” says the New Zealand Sign & Display Association (NZSDA), which is backing a NZ Government study into micro-credentials in signage.

“We could create bite-size micro-credentials in all the sign-making pillars, more cost-effectively, and with less commitment," the NZSDA says.
“This way our industry is still learning and being trained, but the learner can choose the direction of their training and can achieve the qualifications at their own pace. These micro-credentials can be used as stepping stones to an apprenticeship if the learner desires. Hanga-Aro-Rau, one of six NZ Government Workforce Development Councils (WDCs), is seeking sign industry feedback on the development of micro-credentials for the sign-making sectors.
“We have understood from industry that these micro-credentials are necessary to better support this sector by helping to address some of the key concerns the industries are facing, such as skill shortages, attraction, and retention of staff.,” the council said.
“For the sign-making sector, we are proposing micro-credentials that touch on all aspects of sign-making, such as design, manufacturing, application, installation, illumination, and traditional sign-making techniques.
“We see these micro-credentials creating opportunities for clearer pathways into sign-making by breaking down the essential skills and knowledge into more accessible modules. The aim is to streamline the process to benefit the sector. These micro-credentials also upskill and expand the knowledge of those already in the industry who may not have had the opportunity to undergo any formal training.
“The New Zealand Sign and Display Association, on behalf of their members, has raised the need for these micro-credentials. We are now seeking further feedback and interest from industry stakeholders to ensure the micro-credentials are tailored to meet the needs and challenges faced by the workforce.
“We welcome industry experts to share their thoughts and express their support for these micro-credentials. This feedback is invaluable in shaping the future of vocational education for the sign-making sector and the many careers available within it.
