Spandex has furthered its support for apprenticeship training for the sign industry, starting in WA at Polytechnic West at the combined 2014/2015 Apprentice of the Year Awards.
Alan Peardon, Lecturer in Signage at Polytechnic West, thanked Spandex and other industry suppliers for “… having no hesitation to help support the evening, which was well attended by the families of the winners, suppliers and the general industry.”
2015 Apprentices of the Year were:
1. Blake Watson – Eyerite Signs (also won the Warren Rasmussen Award)
2. Coby Coleman – Scene Signs
3. Justin Smith – Sign Supermarket
2014 Apprentices of the Year were:
1. Adam Halsall – Eyerite Signs
2. Mark Hassell - Signs and Lines
3. Alison Ovens - Jason Signmakers
Plus, Sam Duly of Auto-Vision was awarded the “Up and coming Apprentice of the year.”

Spandex Marketing Manager Nathan Barclay says: “As a company, we are committed, to supporting apprentice training through TAFEs and Polytechnics. Also at Polytechnic West, we are holding a workshop on November 19 and, on the Eastern seaboard at Hunter Institute of TAFE, we hold a student workshop this week on Thursday 29 October. It’s all about investing in our future as a thriving industry.”
In presenting the Warren Rasmussen Award to Blake Watson, sponsor Kingman Visual reminded all that the industry is primarily about passion. Rasmussen was a key figure at Kingman, a century-old leading Perth signage firm; and was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident some years ago.
“We continue to look for opportunities to support apprentice training throughout Australia,” says Barclay, “and I would like to thank our WA Branch Manager Russell Barnes for the initiatives he has taken in the West.”
