Michael Doherty from the TAFE Illawarra has been appointed Chief Judge in Signage for the World Skills Australia Competition - a competition that he describes as an opportunity to show case the skills of our great apprentices and trainees in the signage trade.
World Skills Australia and the National Competition for Worldskills Australia will be from Thursday, 6th to Saturday, 8th October 2016 at Melbourne Showgrounds.
WorldSkills Australia National Competition is the largest trades and skills showcase in the country, supported by the Victorian Government.
Close to 500 young apprentices, trainees and students from all corners of Australia will compete for the coveted title of ‘National Champion’ in over 50 skill categories, including Vehicle Painting, Bricklaying, Hairdressing, Programming, Cookery and Welding.
Competing is part of the ultimate journey to greatness for these young competitors. Their journey began at the WorldSkills Australia Regional Competitions held in 31 regions across the country. Their impressive performance at the regional level has secured their place at the National Competition, where the pressure will be on them as they undertake three days of intensive competition against the nation’s best in their field.
In 2016 the scale of the National Competition will be significant with over 40,000 spectators – including many school children considering their future career options are expected to witness the competitors take over 25,000sqm of floor space, roughly the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
300 Judges, 100 Volunteers and $10mil worth of materials and equipment will make the competition possible.
The competitors will utilise an impressive number of resources including 8 tonnes of steel, 10km of cabling, 80 mannequin heads, over 600kg of flour and close to 3,250 stems of flowers and foliage. The event offers more than just the competition. Visitors will have a chance to try their hand at a range of trade and skill-based professions. Students who are keen to learn about vocational pathways and career opportunities will have the chance to speak to industry experts and advisors about the various courses available whilst witnessing the competitors in action
The National Competition is expected to boost the Victorian economy by an estimated $20mil.
We like to encourage all the apprentices and trainees to get involved with World skills Australia which is like the trade Olympics and brief apprentices/trainees on how it all works.
The benefits is not only for apprentices/trainees but the employers and business as well.
