A group of Printing Industries members now numbering over 90, mostly Queensland, votes has challenged the way in which a Special General Meeting has been called by Printing Industries. Spokesperson Tom Eckersley of Print Approach, Brisbane has written a detailed four-page letter to the Fair Work Commission, a government body that has oversight of registered organizations in the union and employer arena. The PIAA is registered with the FWC.
In it, he focuses on the way in which Proxy votes are dealt with, saying:
“I am concerned that aspects of the Notice of SGM and the Proxy Form are biased, misleading, deceptive, wrong and/or do not comply with the PIAA Rules.”
Proxy votes are those where, instead of voting themselves, members can direct their ‘proxies’ to another member – or the President/Chair of the meeting. Handled unfairly, this can result in a ‘stacked vote’ – something the FWC and the Australian Electoral Commission are vehemently against.
The letter was delivered to the FWC on Monday morning.
