USQ’s print and design company Ellipsis Media has taken out the top gong for 3D printing at the 2017 Queensland Print Industry Craftsmanship Awards.
The Printing Industries Association of Australia awards ceremony, which celebrated the print industry, was held in Brisbane on Friday (November 10).
Ellipsis Media won the Gold Medal in the 3D Print category for its architectural model of the Vanguard Laundry for client Hutchinson Builders.
Ellipsis Media Manager Rob Keanalley said the building itself was constructed by Hutchinson Builders and designed by CKD Architects.
“CKD Architects supplied the initial computer-aided designs to our modeller who scaled the building for 3D printing,” Mr Keanalley said.
“The model was presented by Hutchinson Builders to the board of the Vanguard Laundry in commemoration of the official launch in January 2017.”
Mr Keanalley said Ellipsis Media will next compete at the National Print Industry Awards to be held in 2018.
“This award is the culmination of three years of research and development focused on mastering the capability of full colour, binder jet 3D Printing,” Mr Keanalley said.
“This has incredible application in architecture, archaeology, medical education, proto-typing and personalised or customised promotional and marketing fields.”
USQ Campus Services Executive Director Dr Dave Povey congratulated the Ellipsis Media team on its well-deserved success.
“Well done to all involved in this award-winning project – a great result by Ellipsis Media which is renowned for its high-quality and success in this field,” Dr Povey said.
“USQ is proud of its wide-ranging suite of services, including Ellipsis Media, and the work it does to support and develop the University's personnel, mission and goals.”
