The New Zealand Sign and Display Association (NZSDA) appealed to its members to support the new SIGNEE training initiative that begins this year with the launch of a pilot program in Christchurch before being rolled out in Auckland and Wellington.
The scheme aims to attract high school students into the signage industry. After passing pre-vocational training, the Signee will be ready for entry level work in the sign making industry or an apprenticeship.
In its newsletter to members, the NZSDA said: “We must have our members support! Make a difference and get involved with educating our future young Signees, give them the chance to unleash their passion in our industry. To find out more view here or contact Carol King our Training & Communications Officer for a confidential chat on 021 029 767 82."
The association says it needs master sign makers or NZSDA members willing to be involved in any or all of the following:
One week work experience placements – in a full service sign business
Take on Signees for initial one week work experience?
How many would they be willing to take on at once (1-2 Signees at a time), etc
Be available as a ‘go to person’, if Signees need support during the programme
One day a week work experience for 10 weeks – in a full service sign business.
The ‘ideal’ would be for the employer/s to continue with the Signee/s that undertook the initial ‘one week’ work experience with them.
On-site assessment workshops – in a full service sign business
Host/provide sign making premises, or be involved in assessment workshops
Financial costs for providing premises, time and resources will be reimbursed for workshops.
“We have been listening and now taking action, bringing our members what they have been asking for is our key priority - better systems, more benefits and industry training!” says NZSDA president Paul Walters in an NZSDA newsletter. “Make 2019 the year to reassess and re-evaluate how you approach life. Can you make time or the effort to give back to your communities, your families, your peers and the industry?”
