The Visual Impact expo held last month at Homebush, Sydney Olympic Park, may seem done and dusted but, as with all professionally organised expos, it takes a few week to gather, disect and audit the results. The report reproduced below is very encouraging for the industry's adoption of new technologies and directions, and bodes well for the next event to be held in another Olympic city - Brisbane, during July 2024.

Spandex Australia has announced the launch of the European-produced automotive film solutions - Omega Skinz, manufactured by Grafityp Self-adhesive Products N.V and SOTT International B.V. in Belgium. Stocks will become available from July 3rd 2023.

Orafol films and laminates can soar to new heights with specialised aircraft wrapping films that can also be used of vehicles. Needless to say, the properties of adhesion and freedom from bubbles have to be of the highest priority.

Currie Group has installed another EFI FabriVU 340i+ printer, this time at Visual Solutions of Moorabbin, Victoria. Established in 2006 Visual Solutions has earned a brand client list including Hertz, Nikon, Guess, DeLonghi, Renault and M&Ms.

Total Image Supplies has announced the addition of two new sustainable papers for wide format printing, with stocks on the way and available very soon. Most photo papers for aqueous printing are coated containing Polyethylene – a plastic, but not Sihl’s new GreenGrafX. Also new is a 100% cotton rag paper.

When and what were the first ‘wide format’ prints in the world? Many would look towards the early 1990 and the Encad Novajet 1. Some would point to the Versatec and Raster Graphics electroststic large format devices of the 1980s, or even the Iris Graphics 44” printer from 1985, a proofer but much used as a fine art reproduction machine. Andy McCourt reckons we can go back 150 years earlier to the boxwood engravers!

Te Henga Sunset, an original screen print creation described by judges as "a genuine labour of love” has earned Onehunga-based Artrite Screen Printing the coveted 2023 Pride In Print Supreme Award in New Zealand. Catriona Mellows was named the BJ Ball Papers Print Apprentice of the Year.

Following an exciting ASGA / HEXIS Australia Wrap Battle at Visual Impact Sydney, the two Australian champions are about to head off to New Zealand, to do battle for the Trans-Tasman championship.

Despite the recent closure of two paper lines, the Maryvale Opal Australian mill, in conjunction with Veolia and Masdar, has won a $48.2 million grant from the Australian government’s Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI). The state-of-the-art EfW facility will be constructed at Opal Australian Paper’s Maryvale Mill in the Latrobe Valley.
