Describing the Roland DG TrueVis XP-640 inkjet printer as setting a ‘new standard’ in wide-format print quality, Toru Yamauchi, Director and Head of APAC/Japan at Keypoint Intelligence, made the trip to Sydney to formally present Roland DG Australia Managing Director, John Wall, with the 2025 BLI Pick Award in the category ‘Outstanding Gamut Expansion Eco-Solvent / Latex 54”/64” Printer’.

RolandDG logoThe Keypoint Intelligence wide format awards are widely recognised as being amongst the most rigorous and thorough, conducting both laboratory and in-the-field tests, with comprehensive analysis of image quality, usability, and speed.

“There is no doubt that these awards are hard-earned,” confirms Yamaucho. “We tested several products in this category alone and the XP-640 had the best performance overall, delivering outstanding print quality.”

In his own acknowledgement of the award, David Sweetnam, Director of EMEA/APAC Research & Lab Services at Keypoint Intelligence, noted the printer’s exceptional contrasts, vivid colours, and smooth gradations, saying: “What impressed us most about the XP-640 was its overwhelming image quality. In particular, the wide colour gamut and colour reproduction exceeded all other printers we tested.”

Powered by CMYKLkOrGrRe inks, the XP-640 was measured with a recorded average of 780,415 colours, maintaining high colour fidelity even in high-speed print modes. During PANTONE colour matching tests for 15 complex corporate logo colours, the printer delivered an average Delta E00 of just 2.1: the first device in Keypoint’s testing history to achieve less than Delta E00 4.0 across all tested colours.

Roland DG Australia Managing Director, John Wall commented: “The XP-640 is built on many years of technology upgrades and improvements, using everything that we've learned over the years to produce a top-aligned product that stands above the rest.”

The press also boasts easy-to-use, set-up functions that improve media loading accuracy and efficiency, enhancing overall productivity. It ships with the newly developed, Mac-compatible VersaWorks RIP software and integrates with the Roland DG Connect cloud-based platform, offering seamless output for users of all experience levels.

Stand and Deliver

Product & Marketing Manager, Greg Stone, confirms: “Roland DG obviously doesn’t sell directly ourselves, but we have all our key distributors here at the show, so it is important for us to be here in the background, to showcase the technology and ensure we have our product experts on hand to assist with any technical questions or user demonstrations.”

One prime example of this was the presence of Conrad Birkett, Global Manager, Strategic Partnerships New Business Planning Office, Research & Development (Japan) at Roland DG, who shared much of his time between the Roland DG and Celmac stands.

Initially shrouded in secrecy and open for private walk-throughs of the tech only, Celmac eventually opened the doors of its ‘inside room’ to reveal a first-in-Australia glimpse of the next generation Roland DG DA-640 Dimense printer.

Unlike its predecessor, which was developed prior to Roland DG’s merger with Dimense and limited to printing only on proprietary dimensional media, the new enhanced structural inkjet printer has been built entirely on a Roland DG engine and supports a wider range of substrates, including non-dimensional materials.

This is made possible by the integration of Roland DG’s resin-based ink technology alongside the structural ink, allowing users to print both textured and flat applications on a single device.

The printer is also significantly smaller, more energy-efficient, and lower maintenance than its predecessor, and is compatible with the Versaworks RIP and an expanded range of specialist media.

“Roland DG’s engineering is definitely the value-add in all our solutions,” says Stone. “That ability of the Dimense to print on more conventional and non-dimensional materials in one pass is a good example. But the integrated print and cut capability of the TrueVIS range, which enables users to keep their printer running at full throttle whilst simultaneously printing and cutting, is also industry-leading technology that we believe is unique to Roland DG.”

Whilst it always feels a little different to spend time on a stand where the exhibitor isn’t selling directly, it was clear that Roland DG were still at PacPrint to do business and the constant flow of visitors to their stand confirmed their place as a leader in the industry.
