Local company Megara has introduced a PP-based plastic sheet that they say makes it possible to print on plastic with greater confidence, achieving high resolution graphic reproduction.
Daniel Heerding, marketing manager at Megara told Wide Format Online that printers have often had concerns when trying to print onto plastic substrates. Ink adhesion can be unreliable; image reproduction may be inconsistent; the plastic substrate may need to be primed and only limited stock gauges are available resulting in higher spoil quantities and the need to prime coat PP have led to increased production costs and quality issues for print companies.
In response to these problems, Megara have developed a high-quality plastic substrate that is easier for printers to use. It’s called Promeg Digital, and unlike other plastic sheeting, Promeg Digital requires no primer before printing and offers better ink adhesion and colour reproduction on both sides.
“Digital printers were clearly frustrated with the hit and miss nature of other plastic sheet substrates on offer,” says Megara spokesperson, Mark Weiss. “It took our R&D department several years of hard work to develop but we think we’ve found the perfect mix,” he adds.
Allan Bicknell, Digital and Prototype Manager from Craftech, said he was impressed with the ease of printing and reproduction quality Promeg Digital offered.
“We operate three Oce Arizona flatbed printers. We put a test run of Promeg Digital through its paces and were very impressed. We just placed an order for more stock with BMS.”
Sentiments echoed by Gavin Whyburn from Bearprint.
“We were sceptical Promeg Digital didn’t need to be primed first so we set up a split test. You couldn’t tell which sheet had been primed and which one hadn’t, the image looked great on both.”
Promeg Digital has been used on Oce Arizona, Teckwin TeckStorm, Vutek Superwide and HP Scitex printers with results on all printer types being extremely positive.
“It’s been very satisfying to have received favourable feedback from Colourchiefs, The Print Centre, LookPrint, Peak Digital, Evolution Plastics, John’s Print Centre and Vivad on digital polypropylene stock”, says Mark Weiss from Megara.
Promeg Digital is available as stock sheet in gauges of 0.8mm, 1.0mm, 1.4mm and 3.0mm in a sheet size of 1,220 x 2,440mm. It can also be manufactured in custom gauges and sizes subject to minimum order quantities.
Promeg Digital can be purchased directly from Megara, or alternatively sourced via BMS, who hold stock sheet in their Sydney warehouse for speedy delivery.
