Auckland printer Permark Industries has won the gold medal for Functional Printing at this year’s FESPA Awards presented in Munich during the Global Print Expo. Melbourne’s Massivit 3D house Seen Technology won two silvers and Cactus Imaging of Sydney was awarded a bronze medal and a distinction award for its Amex Building Wrap at Sydney Airport.

Permark’s hospital bed controller set, consisting of two membrane switches, has been screen printed in three colours sub surface and using perfectly registered graphite conductive tracks. It has been printed with LED windows and an opaque layer to prevent light bleed, before being applied to a tight radiused injection moulding.
Direct Printing on Three Dimensional Products
Seen Technology, which has a Massivit 1800 3D printer at its facility in Melbourne, won Silver for Direct Printing on Three Dimensional Products for its entry titled Australia Post 3D Printed Limited Edition Stamps (pictured above).
Non-Printed Signage
Seen also took the silver award in the Non-Printed Signage category for its Fletcher Jones Plus 8 Sign Restoration.
The F J Plus 8 man, originally installed in the 1940's at the Fletcher Jones clothing business in Australia, was scanned from the last remaining moulds and then replicated using the Massivit 1800 3D printer.
The 2.5 metre tool by 1080 mm wide was then coated in polyurethane epoxy and sprayed to match the original. The finished sign was mounted to a steel fabricated frame and installed with lighting powered by solar energy.
Posters
Sydney wide format business Cactus Imaging, an oOh!media company,won a bronze in the Posters category and a Distinction award for its Amex Building Wrap at Sydney Airport.
Judges said: This high value poster for Sterling Reserve whisky has been screen printed on a semi-automatic press on sub surface 1mm thick clear polycarbonate. Printed in CMYK plus mirror silver and selective white and uses silver to create the illusion of metalised gold.
The massive job was printed on Cactus Imaging’s grand format Fujifilm Uvistar Pro 8 at its Silverwater facility in Sydney’s west.
Gold Medal winners
The Best in Show Award is judged across all categories on the work that the judges felt represented the most outstanding example of print. This year the award was presented to two companies, Atelier fuer Siebdruck from Switzerland, for its screen printed entry “Creativ Verpacken” in the Serigraphies and Fine Art category and VGL from the United Kingdom for its digitally printed entry “Beefeater Gin Underground Poster Campaign” in the Posters category.
