In a direct appeal to HP shareholders, Xerox says its offer to buy its larger rival would create a $US66.8 billion printing industry giant and deliver $31 a share to HP shareholders. HP’s board rejected an earlier $US33.5 billion takeover bid from Xerox that had offered shareholders $22 a share. Xerox has also revealed it has its eye on 50,000 worldwide HP Wide Format customers and an estimated 10,000 global installations of HP’s flagship printer, the HP Indigo Press.

New research from Smithers says digital print output will increase by 65% over the next 10 years, from $US139 billion in 2019 to $US230 billion by 2029. The dynamic growth rate will be driven by package printing, books and other graphic printing areas.

Carl Icahn, master Wall Street tactician and big shareholder in both HP and Xerox, has followed his proven pattern in hostile take-overs and issued an 'Open Letter' trying to persuade HP shareholders that it's a good thing to allow Xerox to take HP over and save USD$2 billion a year in operating costs. He makes some valid points but admits it's all about 'making billions' - no mention of customers here.
